•Despite being a third world country, South Africa has in fact one of the best higher education systems in the world. Take for instance the University of Cape Town. It is set in a very scenic area in the City of Cape Town which is bordered by the sea and in it is the world famous Table Mountain. Just a few kilometers off the coast is of course Robben Island, home to the most iconic political prisoner of all time the late Mr Nelson Mandela. The University of Cape Town has consistently been ranked in the top 200 universities in the world and this is no small achievement. At UCT you experience a rich academic culture of learning that is diverse and draws on global studies to broaden student’s knowledge horizon. The teaching staff especially in the law faculty where I attended are some of the best jurists in the world. Ever since 2006 and in particular since 2010 when South Africa hosted the World Cup there has been a large influx of North American and European students who have contributed to the global culture of the institution. The institution itself is situated at the foot of Devil’s Peak and there is a lovely forest at the edge of upper campus where on occasion you can spot a dear grazing. There are plenty of squirrels to keep one entertained. One can go all the way to upper campus and have a birds-eye view of the city. I would recommend this institution any day and I am proud to be an alumni there.
